This is part of the
"brainstorming" section of James Findlay's Meta Business
Consultancy Courses. TEAM SPIRIT: is all about each and everyone's ability to function at their best. In this story are hidden keys, hidden abilities, which are needed to get any team functioning at it's best There are 26 abilities - find them and write them down, then you will have the formula for what it takes to create excellence inTeam Spirit. “Team building Team” come to us with a one day survival course
designed to improve our “team spirit”. We are going to be put
through various tasks in various groups. The
Team building Team has planned for the next day a far larger project
for a more glamorous group in front of a large audience, a Show,
where they will demonstrate their own Team Spirit.
This Team building Team have a beautiful, streamlined, racing,
luxury yacht . This yacht is called “Team Spirit”.
This Show tomorrow is also a boat race and the prize in this
race is to come away with the title “The Spirit of Champions” This
Team building Team can sail this yacht beautifully, but not to its
full potential, and they do not know this yet, nobody knows this yet.
What they also do not know, is that one or other members of
this Team Building Team, does not have the same “Spirit”.
This member does not grasp the seriousness and importance of
this “Spirit” and this member’s interpretation and
understanding of their goal is out of sync with the rest of the
team. The
goal for the day ,for both the Team building Team and our group is
to find which individual (ideas) in our group are the best, and
those which demonstrate to be the best, go forward to the next day,
to sail on the Team building Team’s yacht “Team Spirit” At
the start of the day, this Team Building Team divides us into
smaller groups to work out various tasks.
Unknown to the Team Building Team, their tasks are both
exceptionally good and exceptionally bad. The
Dream Building Team (as a team) take us through the first task for
the day and in our various groups we all perform (Performance)
to our best and we are enjoying ourselves and are excited and
look forward to the next task. In
the next task, The Dream Building Team divide up into individuals
each with their own group they will lead through their own unique
activity. In
our group the leader has created a task which may appear to be good
but has no actual relevance to the overall vision.
(In this task we in our group have to divide up into partners
and participate in a wheelbarrow race to find out who is the best). The
results of this particular race is that one
of the women in our group who was exceptional in the first
task, has now been eliminated from the event and will not be sailing
with the yacht tomorrow. You
(responsibility) realize that this individual who was working with
your group has missed the opportunity and possibility to bring
something of value to the race tomorrow. Here is a loss, and our
group can no longer profit from this. You
now realize that this individual from the Team Building team has not
listened to both his own team and our group, and in his
communications and actions, confuses both his team and ours. Though
appearing to be a perfect model a perfect example for the Team
building Team, this individual is functioning and interpreting his
role and work in a trivial manner.
He has lost his way.
This individual from the Team building Team is the steersman
(manager) of the yacht “Team Spirit” You
are now invited onto the yacht and this steersman to your surprise
binds you and your group along the outside edges of this beautiful
streamlined racing luxury yacht.
Even though this yacht has all the luxury amenities to make
your journey as pleasant as you could possibly imagine. You
protest (come with alternative possibilities) by pointing out the
obvious. “It
would be better to place us inside the yacht” Not
paying any attention to you, the Steersman has the authority now to
sail the yacht to the Show. Before
you, like the others, become bound fast to the edges of the yacht
you move to the front of the yacht in front of the line of vision of
the steersman who is now guiding the yacht away from the quay.
He
swings the yacht to the left, you place yourself in a position which
makes the yacht swing back to the right, he swings to the left and
tries to out maneuver you, you match exactly his movement which
makes the yacht swing back to the right again.
You steering the yacht from the front just by positioning
your weight in the right place and him steering from the back of the
yacht with a steering wheel.
He stops the yacht realizing he does not have full control.
All
the extra weight of our group tied and bound on the outside of the
yacht was clearly affecting the buoyancy (Balance).
The steersman now has your full attention and now listens and
realizes where the problem belongs ( his own judgement and strategy
for what is possible).
You then direct him back to the previous day and point out
the value of the member who was eliminated This
member is now allowed with you all to come in the Yacht and you sail
to the Show to the Race…. And
does “Team Spirit” win the race and become “The Spirit
of Champions”? Well
that is another story, and I will tell you it tomorrow.
